The Dark Forest is the setting of the game Happybirthday and a location in Cat Ghost.

Description []

The Dark Forest is aptly named as it is very dim and filled with large trees.

According to Key, the Dark Forest is "a place for those judged"[1].

During a Live Key Session, it was called "a dark breeding ground" for the lost, sinful, cursed, and the wronged, who are somehow both innocent and guilty. When asked who named it, Key said that "Our people have referred to this ground as such for many years"[2]. In another Live Session it was described as "a place of the cursed"[3].

During another Live Session, Key asked the player if they knew where they were, to which they replied "I believe I’m in the dark forest, a place that is cursed". Key answered "The burdens here are not friendly. They see you. Are you aware of that?"[4]

Elon describes the Forest as "a dark, terrible place, it's horrible," and says that "nobody should ever go into it, nobody needs to go into it"[5].

Appearances []

The Dark Forest's first appearance is in CatGhost 1 Birthday, where it is seen in a gameplay sequence of "Party Country". That episode's companion game, Happybirthday, is the interactive version of the sequence seen in the episode itself, and as such is set in the Dark Forest.

The second appearance is in the end of CatGhost 3 Window, where the human versions of Elon and Naarah are seen in the forest. It is seen again in that episode's companion game, Window, where it shows what happened after the scene that was at the end of the episode.

The third appearance is in Void 02, where the Party Country arcade machine displays the Dark Forest with Elon and Malone interacting for the majority of the episode.

The fourth appearance is in CatGhost 9 Welcome Home, where Naarah and Gideon stumble upon a computer displaying the Dark Forest along with the interactable skeletons and objects in Happybirthday.

It is unknown if the forest that is seen in some episodes of Cat Ghost is the same as the Dark Forest.

In-game[]

In Happybirthday, every time the game is restarted the layout of the forest changes, with most of the possible objects encounterable in the seven "rooms" that make up the forest being randomly placed. There is no guarantee that any of the random objects even appear at all, however the rooms farthest to the left and right will always contain a bust.

Other objects that can be randomly encountered are Elon's skeleton, Naarah's skeleton, Bethany's skeleton, a pile of bones, a mirror, a shovel, a hanging chair, and Key.

The Dark Forest may also be the setting of Leak, Pertinence and the opening screen of Dance Party.
